Wind Lab

Preamble

  • Recent years have seen increased Awareness and activity amongst the Indian scientist and engineers about Problems related with industrial aerodynamics in particular and wind engineering in general. This is result of the interplay of several factors- the enormous damage to life, property as well as industrial production caused by wind storms, particularly cyclones; the need to build tall slender structures as well as slender long span bridges, which are wind sensitive, to cater to the needs of the country as it develops its Industries, radio and television transmission network and the transportation system; and the necessity to build housing schemes and industries all over the country including its coastal regions, which are frequently visited by cyclones. While some work has been done in the country to study wind effects on industrial structures much more is required to be done. Since engineering structures are always submerged in atmospheric boundary layer, experimental studies on such structures should be carried out in boundary layer (industrial) wind tunnels for an appropriate reproduction of the atmospheric conditions in the tunnel. The wind tunnel being described belongs to that category and has a size wherein models of structures to a reasonably large can be tested.
