About Us
The Environmental Engineering group (EEG) within the Department of Civil Engineering focuses on solving the most critical and challenging problems related to water, wastewater, air, and solid waste by devising appropriate technological advancements to balance a developing economy's need with the available resources in the country. The country's technological and industrial advancements are associated with the increasing demand for quality energy, safer food, fresh air, and water, which, being finite resources, are continuously dwindling. As the country is undergoing rapid urbanization to support the industrial and population growth, it has become all the more important to innovate newer ways to tackle the stress of the development on the environment. Our country is also likely to get hugely impacted by climate change, which increases the severity of natural hazards and is making our built environment vulnerable. We use several approaches to address these grand challenges - ranging from understanding fundamental scientific principles to intricate engineering design. In this endeavor, our faculty and students work on scales ranging from nano to global to devise new materials or processes for a sustainable future – to maintain and improve the quality of life without compromising the quality and availability of resources for the future generations to come. Environmental engineers impart sustainability in the overall industrial and infrastructural growth so that the root causes of climate change can be lessened and remediated.
Our group is actively engaged in all the fields of environmental engineering. The faculty members are at the forefront of the cutting-edge research commensurating with the challenges being faced for the country's infrastructural and industrial advancements. The faculty members work in varied topics and specializations within the broad area of environmental engineering. The EEG seeks to meet the growing challenges of environmental stewardship and sustainability and focuses on water and wastewater engineering, air and water quality engineering, science, and modeling, environmental nanotechnology, environment-energy studies, ecological microbiology, solid waste management, remediation of emerging contaminant, environmental sensing and green design and construction, to name a few. At present, EEG boasts of having the highest amount of external research funding per faculty member among all the sub-disciplines within the department of civil engineering. We have almost all the essential and state-of-the-art equipment required to conduct quality research. Post-graduate and Ph.D. students are actively supervised for carrying out the research of their choices. The group is also interested in hosting many undergraduate students who wish to carry out research as curricular and co-curricular activities.
